Hokkaido Heritage 'Moor Onsen'

北海道遺産「モール温泉」

Tokachigawa Onsen Kangetsuen

Hokkaido, the northernmost region of Japan, is famous for its abundance of hot springs, boasting the highest number of onsen resorts in the country with 251 locations. Among the most well-known are Noboribetsu Onsen, Lake Toya Onsen, Jozankei Onsen, Sounkyo Onsen, and Lake Akan Onsen, all of which are volcanic in origin.

However, Hokkaido's heritage also includes the unique Tokachigawa Onsen, renowned for its Moor Onsen. Unlike volcanic hot springs, Moor Onsen is a non-volcanic hot spring rich in organic matter derived from ancient plants. This gives the water a distinctive dark brown color and a thick, viscous texture, earning it the reputation of "beauty water" for its exceptional moisturizing and warming properties.

Tokachigawa Onsen is steeped in cultural history, with the indigenous Ainu people, Hokkaido’s original inhabitants, referring to it as "Kusuri-no-numa," or "Medicinal Swamp."

The Moor Onsen at Tokachigawa is classified as a sodium chloride-hydrogen carbonate spring, known for its weak alkalinity, low salinity, and high temperature. It is reputed to provide therapeutic benefits for a wide array of conditions, including neuralgia, muscle pain, arthritis, frozen shoulder, motor paralysis, joint stiffness, sprains, hemorrhoids, chronic digestive disorders, chronic skin diseases, recovery from illness, fatigue recovery, health promotion, weak constitution, chronic gynecological disorders, sensitivity to cold, and even cuts and burns.

Even in summer, hot springs offer benefits beyond just warming the body, helping to maintain health and provide relaxation.

Here are the benefits of using hot springs in the summer:

1.    Fatigue Recovery and Refreshment: Hot springs help improve blood circulation, relax muscles, and relieve fatigue, which is especially useful in the hot summer.

2.    Body Temperature Regulation and Autonomic Nervous System Balance: Immersing in hot springs temporarily raises your body temperature, and as you cool down afterward, it helps regulate your body’s temperature and balance the autonomic nervous system, preventing summer fatigue.

3.    Relaxation and Stress Relief: The heat and humidity of summer can cause stress. Hot springs provide relaxation for both body and mind, helping to reduce stress.

4.    Skin Health: Summer can lead to skin issues due to increased sweat and oil production. Hot springs can soften dead skin cells and cleanse pores, promoting healthy skin.

5.    Refreshment in Nature: Many hot spring resorts are located in nature, offering a refreshing escape from the urban heat. Spending time in a natural environment also rejuvenates both body and mind.
