Brief History

The Arte Piazza Bibai, formerly Bibai Municipal Sakae Elementary School, is approximately 60 km northeast of Sapporo and situated in the heart of the Ishikari plain. "Arte Piazza" means "art square" in Italian.

During the pre-war and post-war periods, Bibai City prospered as one of the leading coal mining cities in Hokkaido. However, from the 1950s onwards, the domestic coal industry gradually declined, and in 1973, the Bibai Coal Mine closed. As a result, the number of children decreased significantly, leading to the closure of the elementary school in 1981.

Subsequently, the renowned sculptor Kan Yasuda, who hails from Bibai, joined forces with Bibai City to undertake the renovation and refurbishment of the abandoned school buildings and gymnasium. In 1992, it was reopened as an open-air sculpture art park. The site, which was initially about 30,000 square meters, has now been expanded and developed to approximately 70,000 square meters (equivalent to about 1.5 Tokyo Domes).

Throughout the year, various exhibitions and concerts are held in the wooden school buildings and the old gymnasium. Just a short distance from Sapporo, it has become a precious space where people can enjoy nature and art together.

Building the Future of Culture Together

Arte Piazza Bibai is a vital place that passes on art and culture to the next generation. Through the generous support of those who cherish art and value culture, the museum is able to maintain its facility and preserve the artworks. Let's join this journey of shaping the future of culture together.
